About Porcelain Veneers

Veneers are wafer-thin porcelain shells that are custom made to bond to the surfaces of the teeth being treated. A porcelain veneer is tooth-coloured and very natural looking, and is used to either mask chips, gaps, and/or stains, and will even correct shape and size of the tooth/teeth. It all depends on what the patient is wanting to correct about their natural smile. Patients with all of these cosmetic flaws can correct them simultaneously with a veneers procedure! It’s quite impressive, and always provides a beautiful aesthetic result.

The Procedure

A patient must first consult with their dentist to talk about their unique goal and to determine whether they’re a candidate for the treatment. If so, the next appointment will typically involve preparing the patient’s teeth for the veneer(s) through the removal of some of the tooth enamel. This will create room for the veneer to be adhered to the tooth. The dentist will take impressions of the patient’s teeth receiving treatment and will send them to a lab to be specially fabricated. During this wait period of around 1-2 weeks, the patient may be given temporary veneers to wear.

Once the custom shells are back from the lab, the dentist will adjust the veneer as necessary before bonding them to the teeth. A special cement material will be used to provide a durable bond. After they are bonded, the dentist will harden the treatment with a curing light. Voila! A beautiful new smile is born… and can be kept in top shape with proper oral care for years to come!
